Soul Tending: highlights week 1 + week 2 prompts

I’m so proud of you Soul Tenders!

While many (or most) are not posting publicly on a regular basis, I believe you’re doing the work on whichever day(s) you can and as you’re able. You should be so proud of yourselves.

Please remember…

If you weren’t doing any of the prompts on this list before this challenge began in September and you’re trying these new things then you’re already winning. You’re experiencing success! Claim it friend.

If you’re new to this space and you’re wondering what this is all about, jump over here to read about the soul care challenge before scrolling down to check out a couple of my favorites of YOUR posts in response to the each of the week 1 prompts.

It’s already been so fun, I’m really excited to see what you all come up with next week (the prompts for week two are at the bottom of this post) as you continue to intentionally + actively tend to your soul.

WEEK ONE HIGHLIGHTS

day 01 | go for a walk

day 02 | read a magazine

day 03 | sip your favorite drink slowly

day 04 | take a bath

day 05 | be a tourist in your city

day 06 | eat a meal outside

day 07 | engage with art

day 08 | dance in your kitchen

Now on to this coming week’s prompts. Maybe you’re returning and missed a few maybe you’re getting started…

No matter, I’m glad you’re here.

Soul Tending Challenge
truly, I’m glad you’re here!

Here are a couple of things I’d like you to keep in mind and the prompts for the second week.

1 | THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!

If you’re setting high expectations for yourself or focusing on “winning” at this, please let that go.

While you’re encouraged to stretch yourself and make margin in new areas of soul tending, the ultimate goal is to remove stress, stuck + overwhelm. Lean into the prompts that excite you and make you smile and put them on your calendar.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors and even co-workers to join you. In this case, the more people you know that are doing this the easier it’ll be – and the more fun too!

Don’t forget to snap a quick photo and when you’re on social media sometime that day (example: on the 9th of September, post your photo of the clouds).

2 | LOOK BEYOND THE MONTH, THINK LIFESTYLE!

Each day you’re able to participate, take a few extra moments to consider if that day’s prompt is something you’d like to revisit, restructure and add to your lifestyle.

Take a moment to journal and/or reflect each day. Ask yourself what you enjoyed or did not like about the activity and star the ones you’d like to repeat before the end of the year.

Think of this as a jumping off point to deeper work in your soul, for your benefit and the benefit of those you love.

WEEK 2 PROMPTS

10 | PLAY WITH A 2-YEAR-OLD

Don’t get legalistic or be too strict with this one. The idea is to spend time with a human much younger than you – a child way outside of your season in life. One of those people who relies on other humans for almost everything they need.

And to do it distraction-free. Put your phone away and get down to their level and simply observe them. Listen to them, ask them questions. Don’t teach or correct, just see them and their little big soul.

Enjoy that.

11 | DRAW, DOODLE OR COLOR

Just how it sounds.

Do this and let yourself push beyond the lines – if there are lines.

Crayola offers some adult coloring pages here!

And please, please, please post your photos. I’m excited to see what comes out of your soul.

12 | BAKE

Plan ahead for this one now. Go pull out that family favorite or hop on over to Pinterest to pick something you’ve pinned and have been wanting to try.

If you’re watching those lbs. be sure to consider baking something with the intent to give the bulk of it away.

13 | GO TO BED BEFORE (OR BY) 9P

You can do this y’all!

Our sleep is so quickly sacrificed in favor of so many other things and it ain’t good. This is a habit I’m becoming more diligent about and in a very short time, I’m reaping great benefits.

You don’t have to be asleep but try to be face-ready, hair-wrapped, pajama-dorned and in bed by 9:00p. If you’re married, encourage your spouse to join you; if you have roomies, challenge them to do the same.

You’re gonna love this one.

14 | CREATE A SOUL CARE PLAYLIST

After my son whipped up a playlist on Spotify – that we still listen to and enjoy today – I finally committed to a subscription and have not batted an eye.

Whatever way you put together a dozen songs to prepare you for whatever it is that you use music to set you up for, do the same for your soul.

If you’re on Spotfiy, please come and find me and be my friend and then also share your soul care playlist with me. I’ve made my list “collaborative” which means we can truly share!

15 | HAVE A “SOCIAL MEDIA FREE” DAY

This may seem ironic, but it’s intended to be.

Although we’re in this soul tending thing together – yes! – it’s okay to take a break every now and again.

I encourage you to this without telling anyone you’re doing so. Just take the day off. No Insta, no Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter or whatever else it is you use to consume stuff about other people and how they’re living.

This is easier for me now than it ever used to be. Mostly because I know why I’m using Instagram (and even have timers on my phone to know when it’s time to check-in – which hopefully explains my delays sometimes) it’s not as big of a deal to take a time off and I encourage you to really consider how it feels and how you can slide this into your regular routine.

16 | GET A MASSAGE

Whatever your budget permits – we’re doing the Dave Ramsey thing y’all! – make it work.

This might mean orchestrating one of those group circles with your co-workers where everyone rubs the shoulders of the person in front of them.

Ewww, no. Don’t do that.

But, if it’s rubbing your own feet or your hands together while breathing deeply – make.it.work.for.you.

____

If you’ve been at this since day 1 and finding yourself wavering or unsure, maybe you’re talking poorly to yourself about your progress using words like “late, behind, mistake” then go back to this post and this one. Doing the steps there will help you be more successful in the soul tending process and more graceful with yourself when things don’t go as planned.

Be very careful how you speak to yourself while doing this, you may be sabotaging yourself.

Also, remember that this challenge is for you. For your soul. Share what you want, keep the rest to yourself and please know I’m praying for you Soul Tender. Have fun out there!

#soultendingSeptember | WEEK 01

Hiya Soul Tenders!

I hope you’re excited! I am…

After this post, I’ll send these on Sundays. But since today is the day – EEEEKKKK!!!! – I’m sending it to you today for the next 9 days. I will posting throughout the day on Instagram with live stories, on my feed and some teachings and deep reflections on my IGTV channel. Over on Facebook, the posts will be more simple – a few words of encouragement to delve more deeply and a photo or quote – and come in the morning around the same time each day. Here on the blog, it will be more intimate. I will share these updates once a week and then a more in depth post once, maybe twice each week. I want to be sure we’re connected, but don’t want to bog you down with too much.

I think of these check-ins, posts, highlights as if we’re sitting down for a great cup of coffee.

A lot of how I talk and hope to encourage you is just like I talk with my girlfriends. They have gotten used to me and know that I prod because I believe digging below the surface of our words, even beyond our actions is where the real growth begins, where our souls are waiting to be tended to.

Instagram Challenge
tall hair, don’t care – it’s soul tending time y’all!

Before I give you some encouragement and direction about this first week, I’d like you to keep TWO things in mind.

1 | This is supposed to be fun!

If you’re setting high expectations for yourself or focusing on “winning” at this, please let that go.

While you’re encouraged to stretch yourself and make margin in new areas of soul tending, the ultimate goal is to minimize stress, stuck + overwhelm. Lean into the prompts that excite you and make you smile and put them in your schedule.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors and  co-workers to join you. In this case, the more people you know that are doing this the easier it’ll be – and the more fun too!

Don’t forget to snap a quick photo and when you’re on Instagram (or Facebook) sometime that day (example: on the 6th of September, post your photo of your meal you’re enjoying outside). If you’re not on social media, please comment here on the blog when it suits you.

2 | Look beyond the month, think lifestyle.

Think of this as a jumping off point to deepen the work in your soul, for your benefit and the benefit of those you love.

Without further adieu…

Here are the prompts for this first week!

01 | GO FOR A WALK

Try to get away for at least 20 minutes and consider leaving your headphones at home or putting your phone on silent. As you walk, consider slowing down and lingering in spots that stir your soul. Take mental snapshots – take it in what you see.

02 | READ A MAGAZINE

Borrow one if you don’t have one. If you’ve already read one flipped through the pages, pick it up again and give it another go. Read the articles you may have skimmed or skipped over. Rip out pages (if you’ve paid for it) that inspire you (save them for another time).

03 | SIP YOUR FAVORITE DRINK SLOWLY

Coffee, tea, water, wine?

Rather than putting your drink (well, the first three) in a to-go cup and running out the door, put it in your favorite mug/glass. Sit down and – device-free – sip your favorite drink slowly.

04 | TAKE A BATH

No need for too much information here. But, if you think to snap a photo before slipping into the tub – I’d be glad to see what you use to soak yourself and wash your cares away.

Snap a photo of those bath bombs, essential oils and whatever else you help you tend to your soul, then go charge your phone elsewhere so you can really enjoy the quiet time alone.

05 | BE A TOURIST IN YOUR CITY

Even if you don’t do it on this actual day, try to do it this weekend!

The museum, that bookstore, coffee shop – take the train instead of driving your car – go to that new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try. Go do something and try it with new, touristy lenses.

If you’re not sure, Google it, like I did here! You’re welcome Dallas area peeps.

06 | EAT A MEAL OUTSIDE

Doesn’t have to be fancy, just do it.

I’m talking to myself here – I don’t really like to eat (or do much) outside. But, I’m gonna do it. Probably with a simple salad or yummy sandwich; nothing over the top.

Nature is really good for the soul – so they say; I’m really working on this.

07 | ENGAGE WITH ART

YOU define the art and engage (participate with or become involved in) with it.

Whether it’s something your child drew, you found it in that magazine you sat with earlier in the week or you make time to head to a museum or art posted in the public library – stop and stare a little longer than you normally would.

What do you see? What is it saying to you? How does it move your soul?

08 | DANCE IN YOUR KITCHEN

“Girl, put your record on, play me your favorite song.” – Anyone know this artist?

Pretty straight forward, right. Get in there and shake what your momma gave ya for a whole song. Have fun, this isn’t a performance.

09 | GO CLOUD WATCHING

Grab a blanket, choose a spot in your backyard or a nearby park, get in your hammock and stare at the clouds.

If you’re looking for a little inspiration – check this out! You’re welcome Mister, my environmental scientist.

___

Have fun. Snap some photos and remember to post them to your stories + feed with the hashtag: #soultendingSeptember so others can see and be inspired by your own soul tending work.

Which one are you MOST excited about this week? Leave your responses in the comments below!

SOUL CARE CHALLENGE | WEEK 04

You already know what comes after September, but do you know what is coming in October? Catch the highlights by reading this quick post and being sure you (and your friends) are all signed up.

With only 8 days left, I am really hoping you surprise yourself during the home stretch. Go back and try something you feel you missed or just wanna try again.

24 | HUG 3 PEOPLE

Or hug the same person three times.

Don’t be weird people…but if you dare – watch this 2:57 video and make it happen! If do dare, please, please, please record a little bit of your experience and share.

25 | MANICURE

Get one, do it yourself or give one to someone who needs to hold their hands still while their nails dry.

26 | PEDICURE

Get one, do it yourself or give one to someone who needs to be off their feet and have a little extra permission to rest.

27 | FORGIVE SOMEONE ELSE

If you talk about them or retell a story involving them and the thing you’re discussing happened more than three months ago – dear friend, it’s time to forgive them and put it down.

It’s time to give yourself permission to walk in freedom – because you’re the one being held hostage — and release them and you too!

28 | HAVE A “TV/NETFLIX FREE” DAY

Just as it sounds.

Read. Clean.

Purchase my short course – HERE! – and plan to tend to your soul.

29 | LIST 29 THINGS YOU’RE GRATEFUL FOR

Have so much fun with this one!

If one of the things you’re grateful for is more of a WHO be sure to let them know.

30 | SNAP A PHOTO OF SOMEONE WHO MAKES YOU BELLY LAUGH

You don’t need to know the person, here is one that make me double over in laughter.

If you do know that person in real life and they don’t make you laugh on this laugh, share a photo of them anyway and remember that time with fondness.

Or be that person and make someone else laugh until they snort or milk comes out of their nose.

___

Have fun this week! More soul tending will be coming to you really soon.
